The library impulse: Nineveh, Alexandria, Baghdad
Long before anyone spoke of "open source" or "free culture", human beings were already doing something remarkable: gathering knowledge in one place so that it would outlive them.
Nineveh: a library crosses twenty-five centuries
In the seventh century BC, the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal — one of the few Mesopotamian rulers who could read and write himself, and proud of it — assembled at Nineveh a library of tens of thousands of clay tablets. He sent scribes across his empire with orders to find and copy everything worth keeping: medicine, astronomy, mathematics, dictionaries between languages, rituals, contracts, and literature — including the Epic of Gilgamesh, the oldest great work of literature we possess.
Then Nineveh fell, the library burned, and here is the beautiful irony: the fire that destroyed the palace baked the clay tablets harder, preserving them under the rubble. When archaeologists unearthed them in the nineteenth century, humanity recovered texts that had been unreadable for two and a half millennia — among them the flood narrative of Gilgamesh, which stunned Victorian Europe. A library had done exactly what libraries are for: it had carried knowledge across a gap of time that no single life, no single civilization, could bridge.
Alexandria: the attempt to collect everything
A few centuries later, the Library of Alexandria attempted something even more audacious: to collect everything. The Ptolemies, the Greek dynasty ruling Egypt, treated knowledge acquisition as state policy. They funded the library and its associated research institution — the Mouseion, from which we get the word "museum" — where salaried scholars lived, ate and argued together. According to the physician Galen, writing centuries later, ships docking at Alexandria's port were searched for scrolls, which were seized and copied for the collection; the story goes that the library sometimes kept the originals and returned the copies.
What matters is not the exact scroll count (ancient sources exaggerate wildly, and modern estimates vary from tens of thousands to several hundred thousand) but what happened around the shelves. Euclid organized geometry into the Elements, a textbook still teachable today. Eratosthenes, the chief librarian, calculated the circumference of the Earth using shadows, wells and geometry — and got astonishingly close. Aristarchus proposed that the Earth orbits the Sun, eighteen centuries before Copernicus. The library was not a warehouse; it was an engine.
Its end disappoints anyone looking for a single villain. There was no one great fire, whatever the legend says: Alexandria's collection declined over centuries of shrinking budgets, political purges, civil wars and neglect — which is, if anything, a more useful warning. Knowledge is not usually destroyed in a night. It is defunded, dispersed and forgotten, quietly. But Alexandria's idea proved indestructible: a civilization is measured by what it makes available to those who want to learn.
Baghdad: knowledge moves when someone pays to move it
The pattern repeats wherever knowledge flourishes. In eighth- and ninth-century Baghdad, the Abbasid caliphs sponsored a massive translation movement — remembered through the storied House of Wisdom, though modern historians debate that institution's exact shape. For roughly two centuries, patrons paid handsomely for Greek, Persian and Indian works of science and philosophy to be rendered into Arabic. Translation was prestigious, well-funded work, and the results transformed the world's knowledge: Aristotle, Euclid, Ptolemy and Galen survived in Arabic through centuries when Western Europe had largely lost them, later returning to Europe through Spain and Sicily to help ignite the Renaissance.
The movement also added much of its own. Algebra takes its name from al-Khwārizmī's treatise on al-jabr; the word algorithm descends from the Latin rendering of his name. This is worth pausing on: two of the most fundamental words in modern computing are monuments to a ninth-century publicly funded knowledge-sharing program.
What these projects have in common
Across three civilizations and fifteen centuries, notice what repeats:
- They were deliberate and expensive. Someone with resources decided that collecting, copying and translating knowledge was worth paying for — not as charity, but as the foundation of a civilization's strength.
- They were for others, including others not yet born. Ashurbanipal's scribes could not have imagined the British Museum; they copied anyway.
- Their value came precisely from not being hoarded. A sealed library is a tomb. These were workshops, staffed and used.
- They were fragile in the same way. Each declined not by catastrophe but by the slow withdrawal of the will to sustain them.
This is the oldest lineage Open Knowledge belongs to: the simple, ancient conviction that knowledge kept is knowledge lost, and knowledge given away is knowledge multiplied. The tools change — clay tablets, papyrus, parchment, print, git repositories — but the impulse, and the fragility, do not.
